Thoughts on Paris
A book of pictures & poems composed in France
by Prabal Pramanik
Introduction to thoughts on Paris
In 1992 I went to Paris to hold exhibition and demonstrations of Indian Paper cutting art
there.
I had read about and heard about that famous city before and as an artist it was indeed a
dream come true to take art exhibition there.
I enjoyed my stay there and made most of it by holding programmes of art at two Museums
there, and drew lots of on the spot pictures of Paris.
People who visited my programmes highly appreciated my art works as they had never before
seen any Indian paper-cutting art.
This visit to Paris had opened up a complete new world to me.
My second visit to Paris was in the year 2000 and this time I visited several other places
in France too.
I held several art exhibitions and some shadow puppet shows there too.
This time I made many more on the spot drawings of Paris. My poems on Paris were written
in Suresnes, a little away from Paris. There I was staying with my dear friend Mr. Kim
VuDinh and respected mother Madam Marion VuDinh.
The poems and the pictures are first hand impressions and composed spontaneously depicting
my feelings about Paris.
These compositions impart the spirit of the place. I would like to express my gratitude to
everyone who made my visits to France happy and successful. - Prabal

Paris
Of dreams set in crystal,
gold and blue,
Shining in many reflections,
Twinkling lights
in blue black stretch,
Streaks of light shivering on Seine,
Cobble stones streaked
With blood in history,
Names that tell stories,
Victor Hugo, Paul Gauguin,
many more-
A city of many glitters,
With darkness intersecting
Each speck of glitter.
Words come easily as feelings erupt forth as the
most powerful ink any pen can have. In Thoughts on Paris, Pramanik comments on
everything that he sees around him... from the people he comes across on his wanderings to
the attitudes that make the most romantic city in the world tick. His poetry is
accompanied by sketches that he made in Paris itself......
